The genus Amphoterus Bezzi 1915 is a rare group of hover flies restricted to the Afrotropical region. Two species are recognised, Amphoterus cribratus Bezzi 1915, known from only one male and one female, and Amphoterus braunsi van Doesburg 1956, described from a single male. While not often collected, a large series of A. braunsi has been accumulated over time at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum. Apart from the usual sexual dimorphism, patterns of pilosity on the face can be used to differentiate males from females in the genus. Photographs, DNA barcodes and notes on useful taxonomic features will be presented.
